Off

In collaboration with the Newark LGBTQ Center and Beloved International we will be a part of the workshops that are going to be  conducted  this summer. The purpose of these workshops are  to bring together transgender people and their allies for dialogue, networking and community building.

Workshop: Self-concept, Self-acceptance and Healing / Thursday, July 24th, 2014 – 6:30pm
Zandile David Benya will discuss his inspiring journey through child abuse, forced marriage at an early age and being exiled from Zimbabwe to gaining political asylum, reuniting his family and starting to rebuild a life for his family in the U.S.. Embedded in his narrative is a constant struggle to carve an identity as a transman, and his journey towards self-acceptance. After David’s talk, we will open up the floor for questions and general discussion.

Transgender Open Forum / Thursday, July 31st, 2014 – 6:30pm
The purpose of the open forum is to bring together members of the transgender community to discuss issues of identity, physical and emotional changes, family and community and faith. The first half of the discussion will be in a “fish bowl” format, a facilitated discussion with people who identify as transgender with allies outside the circle observing, but not participating. During the second half of the forum, we will open up the discussion for everyone to participate.

Panel Discussion – Where’s The T?: Confronting Transphobia in LGBT Organizations/Thursday, August 21st , 2014 – 6:30pm
Panelists will discuss successes and challenges in incorporating members of the transgender community into their organizations. Hopefully, members of LGBT nonprofits and other organizations can learn best practices and network.
